Countdown to InfoComm 2014

After over a year of anticipation the InfoComm show is finally upon us!

InfoComm 2014 is the largest professional AV show in the world, with more than 950 exhibitors and 35,000+ attendees from over 110 countries. This is your once-a-year opportunity to see the latest audiovisual technology, learn the skills that will advance your career, and grow your professional network."

This year InfoComm is in Las Vegas at the Las Vegas Convention Center which is the same venue for some of the largest conventions in different industries including the SEMA show for the automotive folks and CES or the Consumer Electronics Show. While this is my first time actually attending an event of this magnitude I'm familiar with how these  go down. There will be a TON of exhibitors spread across the LVCC's two huge north and central halls and never enough time to see everything.  Myself and two other colleagues from Creighton will take some time on Tuesday for some professional development classes. I am personally looking forward to "The 25 Gotchas of Dynamic Digital Signage and Go-No-Go Decisions", but I will also be attending "Digital Signage in Higher Education", "10 Best Practices for Digital System Design", and refresher Biamp training class on their Tesira line. There is also talk about a tour of University of Nevada's Law School which is touted as the example of AV for higher education.

If you couldn't tell from the classes I opted-in for I'm going to InfoComm with my sights set on Digital Signage which is what i've been spending my time at Creighton working on. In particular I'm looking for hardware, (interactive) displays, video walls, mounting solutions, and distribution. I'm pretty sold on Four Winds Interactive as a content system, but there's some interesting content stuff that's going to be there too.

Digital Signage isn't just it. I want to explore more AVB and layer 3 network-based AV distribution systems such as offerings from AMX and SVSI which will likely be involved in my next project at Creighton. I can't wait to meet up with our sales reps and product managers from NEC, Biamp, and Peerless AV to find out about the new things that they haven't been able to talk about yet. Something that I found interesting was that Cisco has a surprising large presence at InfoComm this year, as large as Crestron maybe. While they make their bread and butter from network infrastructure, they are really making waves in the collaboration and unified communications  areas ever since they acquired Tandberg. I'm looking forward to seeing these new products, but I'm especially looking forward to grilling them about why they haven't released firmware updates for their switches to support Audio Video Bridging or AVB (Or IEEE 802.1BA if you want to get technical). I mean they were founding members of the group that started the whole thing.... You wonder why Netgear and Extreme Networks are eating their lunch over this.

Our other mission going in to the exhibit halls will be to find something that will eradicate SMART Technologies annotation software campus wide. Hey, when it works it's great, but that's probably only 20% of the time. The other 80% the pens are always out of alignment, the touch screen Sympodium monitors are never "connected" or some how magically lose their connections, or SMARTInk (Which is the worst software ever made, ever) won't go back to regular mouse mode...Not to mention the ink is rendered on top of windows which is not compatible with screen capture software and you can no longer just draw on the freaking desktop without some notepad junk appearing.  I could go on and on about the trouble we have with SMART products, but I'll let the internet do it for me.

I'm also looking forward seeing the latest gear from the major touring industry companies such as Meyer Sound Labs, Midas, Allen and Heath, and Yamaha, and catching up with the folks at the IATSE booth.

All in all this is shaping up to be an excellent week. Lots of amazing professional development opportunities,  meeting up with my reps, some face to face for the first time and networking with fellow Higher Ed AV folks too. Take all of this and add my girlfriend, Las Vegas, maybe a show or two, dinner and drinks, and maybe a little blackjack and you've got a perfect week.

I'm certainly going to post some follow-ups from the show with what i've learned and some of the new tech!

I've added more since I've had time to scroll through the InfoComm14 Show app, but here's the list of exhibit booths I want to visit:
